TEDxThirdWard: A Stage for Bold Ideas, Rooted in Community
When I set out to create TEDxThirdWard, I knew I wanted to do more than just host another event. I wanted to build something that reflected the spirit of innovation, resilience, and leadership that has long defined Third Ward, Houston. This community has birthed changemakers, artists, and trailblazers—people who see possibilities where others see obstacles. It’s a place that has always been home to big ideas, and I wanted to create a platform to amplify those voices and invite the world to listen.
Out of over 140 submissions, here's our final lineup:
Starting from the top row, left: Dr. Amber Gunner, Cris Wright, Gina Carroll, Ed Pettitt, Rev. Dr. Stephanie Wilkins, Nguyen "Tom" Griggs, Jotina Buck, Mary Adegbesan, Sierra McClain, and Vivian Liu were chosen by the 8-member Speaker Selection Committee, two remaining speaker slots will be filled by People's Choice Voting.
TED has always been about spreading ideas worth sharing, and I saw an opportunity to bring that mission to our backyard, where lived experiences, cultural richness, and forward-thinking collide. I wanted TEDxThirdWard to be a space where new ideas meet action—where people walk away not just inspired, but motivated to do something with what they’ve learned.
Why TEDxThirdWard?
Our Curator Team created TEDxThirdWard because we believe:
• Ideas shape communities. Powerful talks can challenge our assumptions and push us toward solutions.
• Representation matters. Too often, brilliant minds from communities like Third Ward don’t get the platform they deserve. We’re changing that.
• Conversation leads to action. TEDxThirdWard isn’t just about words—it’s about mobilizing people to make an impact.
This event is about bringing together dreamers, doers, and changemakers—those who are willing to challenge the status quo and step up to shape the future. The theme, Dream. Dare. Do., is a call to action for all of us.

We’re also letting the community choose two additional speakers through our People’s Choice selection process—because this event isn’t just about us, it’s about you.
